Star Awards

Congratulations to the following children who were awarded certificates for their achievements this week and last

Jude (Wooden Hill) - for being was so kind to the younger children. He helped them to play a game away from the bigger boys who were playing football and encouraged the younger boys into activities.

Hannah (Squirrel) - for persevering to write her name correctly, using a capital letter for the H and then lower case letters.

Kacper (Vole) - for learning to ride his bike without stabilisers!

Nathan (Otter) - for being such a super big brother. Playing nicely with your little sister, taking turns and sharing. 

Tate and Lottie (Beaver) - every time Mrs Kelly calls them up, they are so eager to tell me what they have been up to and enthusiastic about all of their learning. I always look forward to this 3-way conversation.

Zakariya (Rabbit) - for inspiring Miss Smart and Miss Bolton by baking cupcakes with his mum and selling them, raising a huge £310 for the NHS. We are so amazed.”

Cody (Crossbill) - for finding lots of fun ways to keep entertained during this time! 

Katy (Jay) - working super hard on all her learning at home and completing her Introduction to British Sign Language course this week. 

Joshua (Kite) - for trying sewing for the first time and successfully making a face mask.

Kayleigh (Owl) - for the amazing artwork she produced during this week’s art project.

Jack (Wooden Hill) - for so patiently helping the younger children to plant their seeds and plants.

Freya (Squirrel) - for showing such an interest and enjoyment in phonics.

Finley (Vole) - for being brave and resilient, following a after a nasty bike crash and a hospital visit he is now trying to master skateboarding!

Clark (Otter) - for making fantastic progress in English. You have been working really hard to improve your writing and you have also been enthusiastically reading lots! 

Olivia C (Beaver) - Olivia has been busy finding out which materials would make the best roof for her house.

Arthur (Rabbit) - for completing every single piece of work set on Google Classroom to an incredibly high standard. Miss Smart has been impressed by his determination and focus. 

Emmy (Deer) - continuing to grow in confidence, keeping in contact and cheering up her friends and still making new friendships!

Jayden (Greenfinch) - a positive attitude to his home learning from the start and always tries his best. 

Zak (Chaffinch) - very kind - he is the first one to offer help to his fellow students if they are unsure or request support.

Lennon (Crossbill) - for trying really hard with this learning and making a fantastic chocolate bar!

Milly (Jay) - continuing to work hard at home and particularly for the big improvement in her handwriting.

Oscar (Woodpecker) - for your highly imaginative ideas of alternative 'food' clothing based on the poem, 'The New Vestments'.

Rowan (Kite) - using his writing to create an interesting audio story about nightmares.

Arina (Owl) - her work in ‘The Great Year 6 Cook Off’: she made waffles which looked delicious!

Wooden Hill Class

The sun has shone on the Wooden Hill Class this week and they have had great fun outside.  The theme for the week was ‘Wildlife and Gardens’ and the children have thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is what Caiden wrote about Wednesday’s activity:

"On Wednesday, we made a paper fish.  We drew around our hand on a piece of coloured paper then cut it out.  Next we got a plastic straw and some sellotape and stuck the straw onto the back of the fish.  Finally, we drew on the fish to design it."

This was just one of the many activities carried out over the week including rock painting, leaf printing, paper spinner making, bark rubbing, seed planting and planting flowers in pots and flower beds.  The Wooden Hill Class are now going to have to water and look after these pots of flowers.  Look out for them when you walk past or visit the school.

Nursery Roundup

In Nursery, we have been continuing our theme of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other bugs.

The focus this week has been on the story of Aaaarrgghh! Spider by Lydia Monks.

The children have been enjoying sharing this story and other stories about bugs.

They have been creating some wonderful craft.

Bethany, Freya, Zach and Zac have been working hard to develop their fine motor skills.

Hannah, Freya and Ollie have played family games to find objects beginning with the sounds that we have been learning.

 

George is very proud of himself because he can ride his bike without stabilisers.

Well done to all of the children in Squirrel class. You are working so hard!

Reception Roundup

Reception children are continuing with amazing learning this week. Massive well done to all the families that are supporting their children so brilliantly, both emotionally and academically.

In literacy the children have been making up their our own stories based on the traditional tales they’ve been reading over the past few weeks. Across Bracknell, there have been talented Wooden Hill Reception children delighting family and friends with their performances of new versions of traditional tales, supported by story plans and their own wonderful imaginations. There have been stories involving an octopus, owls, lions, starfish and many more.

There have been some wonderful examples of writing being shared across Google Classroom, thank you to all those children who have been sharing their work, it really makes us feel proud and happy to see your smiley faces and hard efforts.

In Maths, there’s been plenty of real life problem solving using toys, counters, pebbles, cakes and anything else you can take away. It’s terrific the way that siblings are getting involved in learning through play. Well done on working on numbers up to 20 over the last few weeks – we can see there’s been a real improvement in number recognition and formation too.

There’s been lots of other learning too – Finn has been painting toilet rolls and turning them into spiders. Henry has created some super shape pictures which are very artistic. Amalie has been making bug homes. There has also been helping with DIY, cooking and making meals, hula hooping, fishing, solving Rubik’s cubes and lots of reading. Remember all learning is fun, so if you are doing other things please share them with us on Google Classroom, we love to see what you are all doing.

Year 1 Roundup

It has been another week of great work and phone calls from all the children in Year 1. Last week we loved hearing about all of your celebrations for VE Day. This week the enthusiasm has continued into their science work where the children have enjoyed exploring waterproof materials at home. We have loved seeing all the collages/posters and experiment pictures as well as all your cooking projects through Google Classroom. We can’t wait to taste some of these yummy cakes and meals as soon as we are back to school.

Congratulations to Max G has been awarded his next grade (red with a white strips) in Karate, Alex has enjoyed fishing this week and was able to catch her biggest fish to date and Preston has even designed his own monster maths machine.

William F has been writing to his great grandma who is 100, Mia has made some toilet roll animals. She would love you all to work out what each one is. 

Year 2 Round Up

Over the past week, Year Two have been taking part in a very special challenge - the Flat Teacher Challenge! Teachers around the globe have been missing their classes, so created a lovely challenge based on 'Flat Stanley' which Miss Smart and Miss Bolton just knew they had to re-create for Year Twos at Wooden Hill!

The children were reminded that even though they haven't been able to physically see their teachers, that their teachers are always with them and are there to support them. So, we created flat versions of ourselves, and sent them to the children to use to make memories with us! The children now have flat teachers to support them with any challenges, with reading, home learning and to make fun memories with! Here are some pictures from our Flat Teacher Challenge. We are going to keep it going throughout the summer term, and we can't wait to see lots of photos! 

Arthur and his sister, Amelia, enjoyed a well earned study break with Miss Smart and Miss Bolton- and lots of ice-cream! The Year Two teachers were also thrilled to be helping George with his grammar work. You know how much we love expanded noun phrases. As well as this, we loved watching Drew be a whiz on Spelling Shed! Well done for working so hard Drew. 

There has also been a lot of yummy baking going on. Emmy and Poppy have been baking some tasty treats for their elderly neighbour. Zakariya has been raising money (£310) for the NHS by baking and selling cupcakes and George was also baking, and seems to love the cake mixture.

Year 3/4 Roundup

Year Three and Four have been learning all about one of the most precious resources on our planet, the rainforest. They have been researching what deforestation is, how it has impacted Central America and what adults, children and companies can do to help save the rainforest. The children have also been learning about palm oil, what it is and how the harvesting of palm oil can impact on animals in the rainforest.

This is a really important subject for everyone to be aware of and the children have taken great interest in learning how to help. They have worked incredibly hard on their research to create posters making people aware of what is happening and what we can do to make it better.

They have been researching and designing Mayan masks and have also been writing their own adventure story set in a rainforest and have been thinking really carefully about the senses and what the character would see, hear, feel, touch and taste around them and also how the character feels and thinks throughout the story.

We are still so impressed by how hard all the children have been working at home and how much determination and effort they are putting into their work, they should all be very proud.

Year 5 Roundup

Year Five have continued to be busy with their learning and have been showing their creative sides too! 

With their writing they have been thinking about magazine articles and extreme journeys to school and also, nonsense poetry. Theey looked at The New Vestments by Edward Lear; a poem about a man dressed up with food for his clothes. Here are some of our own, inspired by the poem and the food portraits of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. 

In Science, the children have been continuing their learning about space. They have learnt about the Moon including its phases and what it is made of. They have also learnt how the movement of the Earth in relation to the Sun causes day and night and the seasons. As part of their Science project the children had to decide on how they were going to present the solar system.

The children also learnt about Kandinsky, who was an abstract artist, and created artwork in his style based on the eight planets in our solar system.

Year 6 Update

Year 6 have been looking at the artist Claude Monet and particularly at his  painting ‘Woman and the Parasol’. They began the project by learning about Monet and his impressionism. After that, they were tasked with studying the picture of ‘Woman and the Parasol’ and using pencil strokes to create depth and tone. 

Objective 3 was to imitate Monet’s painting using a variety of the pencil strokes which they had been practising. Finally, they had to think about the scenery around where they live or a favourite location of theirs and create their own picture based on the style of Monet. 

Some of the children have been getting creative in other ways at home and sharing this via the Stream page on Google Classroom. Have a look at some of the brilliant creations below by Gabby who made a mask out of a sock, and Joshua who tried out sewing for the vey first time.
