The Wooden Post - 17th May 2019

Dear Parents / Carers,

What a busy couple of weeks we have had at Wooden Hill School!  Huge congratulations to Year 6 for their hard work, energy and enthusiasm as they took their SATs tests.  I have been immensely impressed with their positive attitude and determination and am very proud of them all.  

Thank you for all of your support, kind words and encouragement during our OFSTED inspection this week.  The outcome of the inspection will be published in a couple of weeks and will be sent home as soon as it is released.  

This half term seems to have flown by as we break up for the half term holiday next Friday, 24thMay.  Don’t forget that the school is closed to children on Thursday 23rd May due to the elections.  Hopefully the sun will continue to shine during the half term break!

Congratulations

Huge congratulations to Mrs Brown who is expecting her first child in September.  Congratulations also go to Mrs Sawford who is expecting her 3rd child later on in the autumn term. 

Attendance

Year 6 continue to have the highest attendance at 97.56%, closely followed by Year 3 with 97.19%.  The whole school attendance is 96.46%.  

Safety

For the safety of all our children, please do not park, or stop, at any time on the yellow zig zag lines outside the school.  We have had further complaints from concerned local residents who have been advised to give car registration details to the police. 

Rashes

There have been a number of children with unexplained rashes on their faces and bodies.  Please can we ask that you seek medical advice from a pharmacist or doctor if your child has a rash and inform us if they are diagnosed with slapped cheek. 

Tidy School Day

On Saturday 15th June we will be having another Tidy School Day.  If you are free, please do pop along to help make our school look even more fabulous!  We will be looking for help with our garden project as well as larger tasks.  If you have any particular skills which you can offer, please let the office know.  Children are also welcome but must be accompanied by an adult and will remain the responsibility of the adult.  Further details to follow.

Keeping Healthy in Reception

Reception have been learning about why we eat vegetables and how to stay healthy. As part of this learning, the children have planted beans. Jude’s beanstalk is the tallest so far – nearly as tall as Jude herself! They have also created super hero vegetables like Supertato and super carrot.

They have also made healthy fruit kebabs, written a shopping list of ingredients,  and perhaps most importantly they got to eat their fruit kebabs.

And finally, the children got to look at the caterpillars, cocoons and butterflies as they have been studying the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar which is linked to the fruit and vegetable topic.

I think you can guess which part the children enjoyed the most! 

How to Measure with Year 1

Year One have been learning how to measure length this past week. They have been using non-standard units of measure and then they moved onto using a ruler. They made sure they measured accurately by starting at 0 and including the correct unit of measurement.

The Great Fire of London - Year 2

In Year 2, the children have been learning all about The Great Fire of London. They have put all of their learning together and presented these as news reports. Here are some photos of them rehearsing and presenting their reports. 

Year 5 Update

In Science, Year 5 have been learning about the relationship between the sun and the Earth and how the movement of the Earth leads to us having day and night and the seasons. 

They have been lucky enough to have a music teacher from Berkshire Maestros teaching them how to play the recorder since Easter. So far they have learnt to play the notes A, B, and G as well as how to read some musical notation.

Berkshire School Games

On Wednesday a group of Year 1 and 2 pupils represented Bracknell Forest at the Berkshire School Games. They took part in a Change4life Festival where they had a lot of fun trying out different challenges that tested a variety of skills including; teamwork, throwing, catching and movement. We also got to try out different activities at the Cultural Village including football skills, drawing maps and laser shooting at targets. All the children had an excellent day and showed some amazing sporting skills. Watch out for these future stars! A big thank you to all the parents who came to help out, such an excellent day wouldn’t be possible without your support.

Polling Day Reminder

Please don't forget it's Polling Day on Thursday 23 May and the school will be closed due to being used as a Polling Station.
