Dear Parents and Carers,

A very warm welcome back to what promises to be yet another amazing year at Wooden Hill School. The children have all settled back really quickly and there is a real buzz of learning throughout the school. Our new Reception and Nursery are particularly well settled and are becoming very familiar with the routines of school. We hope you enjoy our newsletters which will go out every other Friday and will contain important news, information and reminders. In this edition we have the details of some vacancies which have arisen in the school as well as a summary of some of the information which has been sent out in other letters over the last couple of weeks. All of us at Wooden Hill are very much looking forward to working with you and your child (or children!) over the next academic year.

Vacancies @ Wooden Hill

We are looking for a couple of very special people to join our team on a temporary basis to support the learning and/or social and emotional needs of a couple of individual children.

We are looking for:

A temporary (until Easter but with the possible view of extending further) 1:1 SEND Support Assistant to support the academic progress of a pupil whilst providing care and nurture to support the child’s emotional needs and associated behaviours. An awareness of attachment is an advantage. Monday – Friday, term time only 8.30am – 12.15pm.

A temporary (until Easter but with the possible view of extending further) Nurture Support Worker to predominately work with a named child but may also involve working with other children. An understanding of attachment and early childhood trauma is an advantage. Monday – Friday, term time only 1pm – 3.15pm.

A temporary (until Easter 2020) 1:1 SEND Support Assistant to work with a named pupil in our Early Years. Tuesday and Thursday, term time only 8.45am – 12pm.

We are running a series of Open Mornings and Stay and Play sessions for families looking for Reception places for September 2020. Please spread the word about our fantastic school!

School Building Development

During the summer 2020, there will be building works to re-develop our classrooms; removing and remodelling our open plan spaces and creating an additional classroom. Please do come along to see the initial plans and ideas in the school hall on Monday afternoon from 3.15pm.

Gardening Club - Help Needed

Unfortunately, Mei, who has taken the lead with running the gardening club, is no longer able to run the club. We are therefore looking for volunteers to help Mrs Hill run the club during lunchtimes. If you are able to offer some support in running this wonderful club, please contact the school office for more information.

Fundraising

Our next meeting regarding fundraising for the school is on Tuesday 8^th October at 6pm, all are welcome.

Save the date – our Christmas Fundraiser will be on December 6^th in the afternoon. Further details to follow.

Disco

A disco has been booked for Friday 18^th October. Further details to follow. The Year Two team have also arranged a raffle which will be drawn on this day. If you can support the raffle in any way, please contact either of the Year Two teachers; Miss Bolton or Miss Smart.

Reception Roundup

The children have settled into school life extremely well and are enjoying their learning both inside and outside.

So far we have looked at the story ‘Topsy and Tim start school’, which has led into talking about school rules, expectations and routines within the classroom.

Last week we started our phonics focus, Read, Write, Inc and have learnt the sounds ‘m,a,s,d.’ This week saw the children learn the sounds, 't', 'i' and 'n' as well as recapping the sounds from last week.

In Maths we have been learning all about the number 1 and practicing our number formation.

The children have also been drawing pictures of themselves and writing their names.

Year 1 Roundup

Year 1 have been busy settling into their new surroundings very well. They have been discussing class rules and the expectations of being in Year One!

In class they have been producing some wonderful creations based upon the book 'The Rainbow Fish' drawn and written by Marcus Pfister a Swiss author and illustrator. They have been painting , making fish masks, creating wax resist scenes as well as making animals from the story with playdough.

In Phonics we have learnt the sounds ‘igh’ (fly high) and ‘ow’ (blow the snow) and have been using our new sounds when reading and writing.

In Maths we have been counting forwards and backwards within 10 and have been representing numbers using a variety of objects including counters, cubes, counting bears and Numicon.

Year 2 Roundup

Miss Smart and Miss Bolton have been incredibly impressed by the effort the children have put into their home learning task this term! The children have been been asked to talk to their grandparents about the types of toys they may have played with when younger. We have discussed what the children learned and they have produced some amazing posters.

In English the children have been developing their retelling skills using techniques like echo reading (adult reads then the children copy) to learn the story ‘Toys in Space’ by Mini Grey. The children then sequenced the key events and then retold the story in their own words to the class. The children loved having their own take on what had happened in the story!

In maths the children have loved being introduced the to the Times Table Rockstars app on the school iPads, the app is used throughout the school, and children are encouraged to compete against each other to earn 'coins' for practising their times tables.

Year 3/4 Roundup

In Year Three and Four English this week, the children have been using thesauruses to find synonyms of words to help us describe a Stone Age setting.

In Year Four maths this week the children have been looking at place value and understanding the value of each digit and used a range of concrete resources to help us!

This year we are looking at the art work of Roy Lichtenstein an American pop artist who created his art work with dots. We have been creating our own self-portraits, in the style of Lichtenstein, carefully using dots with pens and pencils!

Year 5 Roundup

Over the past week, the children have begun their topic ‘What did the Roman’s do for us?’. So far, they have learnt about the invasion of Britain, the Roman army and Hadrian’s wall. The children have been taught the topic so far through oracy. This means they have been asking lots of questions, having lots of discussions (while developing their discussion skills) and have been using their teacher as a guide to help them to be active learners and find things out for themselves.

Year 6 Latest...

After finalising their applications last week, this week saw the elections for the roles of House and Sports Captains.

Congratulations to those children elected and all the others who applied and, for the House Captain applicants, who provided speeches!
