Curriculum Intent
The curriculum at Wooden Hill Primary School is designed to enable our pupils to be knowledgeable, creative and inspired to learn. We provide first-hand learning experiences, which allow our children to develop social skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.
The curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop as independent, confident and successful learners with high aspirations, who want to make a positive contribution to their community and wider society. The curriculum ensures that academic success, creativity and problem-solving, responsibility, resilience, physical development, well-being and mental health are key components that support the development of the whole child and promote a positive attitude to learning. The curriculum celebrates our community’s diversity while supporting the pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, ensuring that children are well-prepared for the next stage in their education.
We want our pupils to love learning through an inspiring and exciting curriculum that empowers them and equips them for today and for their future life in Modern Britain.
Curriculum Implementation
At Wooden Hill, our curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum 2014 and other experiences and opportunities, which best meet the learning and development needs of the children.
The curriculum is made up of many planned experiences including lessons, special days, assemblies, clubs, the School Council, sports, educational visits, workshops, voluntary work, and community events. Our inspiring, rich curriculum is designed so that subject specific skills are progressively taught within a cross-curricular topic each half-term. In order to ensure that progression, breadth and balance are maintained, the programmes of study have been developed in to medium term plans by subject leaders, which clearly highlight learning objectives and assessment opportunities, and skills are built upon year-on-year. Teachers translate these plans into half-termly overviews, showing subject links, and then in to weekly plans where the specific needs of the learners in each class are addressed. We have developed ways of assessing children’s needs and measuring impact on progress and attainment, and, therefore, teaching is carefully designed to meet the needs of all pupils. Our teachers, with their good subject knowledge, are skilled at adapting their teaching to ensure all pupils can access the curriculum and make progress in lessons.
Curriculum Impact
The curriculum design ensures that the needs of individual and groups of children can be met within the environment of high quality first teaching, alongside targeted interventions where appropriate. In this way, the curriculum can be seen to impact positively on pupil outcomes.
Excitement and enjoyment of the curriculum inspires achievement, develops confidence and excellent behaviour. Children feel safe to try out new experiences. High quality school visits and visitors to school further enhance the curriculum and provide good opportunities for language development.
Our children have opportunities to share their learning with their parents and carers, teachers and each other through school-based exhibitions, class assemblies, homework and competitions. We believe in the importance of developing our pupil’s independence and motivation as learners, as well as their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of the teaching and learning at Wooden Hill Primary School.
